Resources

For UC Berkeley faculty:

Technology. The Guide to Computing and Communications Resources has an excellent list of resources for faculty interested in using technology in their classroom or research. For example, faculty can get accounts (free of charge) on Socrates. Accounts include email, file services, and web publishing (e.g, space for your web page). The campus also runs a WebCT server, which allows faculty to put up basic course web pages (as well as add more complex options such as chats and online quizes) without knowing any html or programming.

Computer Training. There are a number of sources for training on campus. Visit Educational Technology Services' Training page for a an excellent collection of training resources.

Grants. The Office of Educational Development offers two grant programs. Instructional Minigrants provide rapid access to modest funds (up to $1000) for small-scale projects to improve existing courses, develop new courses, evaluate instruction, and assess curricular needs. Classroom Technologies Grants (up to $3500) are designed to help faculty introduce new instructional technologies into the classroom; projects might include creating multimedia instructional materials, developing and monitoring electronic information servers for courses, and so on.

Awards. The Distinguished Teaching Award and the Educational Initiatives Award recognize excellent teaching and/or ideas on campus.

Classroom Observation. Faculty who wish to discuss aspects of their teaching, or to arrange for classroom observation and/or videotaping, should contact Steve Tollefson in the Office of Educational Development, 642-6392; email: tollef@uclink.berkeley.edu.
