1993: Department of Forestry and Resource Management,
College of Natural Resources

Now part of a new and larger Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM), the former Department of Forestry and Resource Management received the first Educational Initiatives Award for its development of a new teaching program in cultural resources and ecology. Created were three new courses that fall within the college's new undergraduate Resource Management major but that also satisfy requirements for students both within other majors in the College and campus-wide.

1994: Institute of Governmental Studies

The Institute of Governmental Studies, an Organized Research Unit (ORU) on the Berkeley campus, received the 1994 Educational Initiatives Award for "The American Political System in Action," a program set up to provide research opportunities for undergraduate students. With seventy-five students participating in the initial effort, the program showed how the University's twin missions of teaching and research could be combined in a single effort.

1995: Undergraduate Instrumentation and Image Processing Laboratory,
Department of Astronomy

The Undergraduate Instrumentation and Image Processing Laboratory, and its associated laboratory courses, Astronomy 80 and 180, received the 1995 award for a program which enables undergraduate students, working collaboratively in research groups, to design and assemble a radio observatory on the roof of Campbell Hall, then use it to make astronomical observations. The development of this program has led to an increase in the number of astronomy majors, from twenty in 1991 to forty in 1995. In addition, what started as an elective has now become a required part of the Astronomy major. The Committee on Teaching praised the cooperative and interactive nature of the Laboratory and associated courses.
