What Good Teachers Say About Teaching

Charles J. Keeney

My philosophy of teaching my classes is very simple:

Get to know the names of students each term.

Realize that even though they may not be very adept at the particular skills that I am teaching, they are certainly competent, intelligent people who are eminently worth knowing.

Always be kind, especially when correcting their mistakes.

Teach by adding one small skill at a time, adding skills as a student is ready for the next step.

Encourage students to form their own philosophy of life. Do not try to push them into any particular mold. Remember that each individual must develop his or her own philosophy.

Provide a good example both in and out of the classroom (i.e., refrain from the use of tobacco, alcohol, vulgarities, and so on).
