Seda Chavdarian
French

French 1, Fall 2008

The fact that this entire class is in French should not deter anyone from seeing an outstanding teacher in action. Seda Chavdarian enters her classroom with a smile on her face, obviously full of energy, immediately greets her students, and begins engaging them in conversation. The entire session is devoted to using active learning techniques. No one in this class has the chance to remain still or silent for very long. Chavdarian is always on her feet moving around the room and casually approaching students as she asks them questions or listens in as they talk with each other. Several times during the class she has the students up and moving around the room, talking in pairs. Just as quickly she has them change partners. Later in the class students begin approaching the board to write examples for the rest of the class. At another point students turn to their closest partner and begin new conversations. All the while Chavdarian moves through the group, observes, and comments. Note the casual way she corrects students throughout. For instance, as 1:25, “David” says, “je present” and Chavdarian smiles and says “je vous present.” The corrections are always clear, but treated as just a part of the process of learning. Note, too, how Chavdarin will use gestures to help students with words, rather than slipping into English. At 37 minutes, for instance, she asks a student to say what happened yesterday, “hier,” and gestures back over her shoulder to indicate past. At 40 minutes, you’ll see the class change from conversation practice to lessons in pronunciation, using the board and having the students repeat sounds.
