This 50-minute lecture examines economic formulas. Professor Olney begins by reminding her students of the upcoming mid-term exam. She asks them to “practice by putting pen to paper.” Professor Olney goes on to explain that it isn’t enough to just listen to her, or listen and take notes, or it’s not enough to think about how you might answer exam questions. Again she asks students to practice by writing out potential answers to questions. Olney offers her time or her GSI’s time to review these practice answers. The lecture is a review of formulas which Professor Olney supports with subtle and effective enhancements. She relies on overheads throughout the lecture but many of the screens only have partial information. As she talks her way through a formula she fills in the overhead with the needed information. While working on the formulas she places the information in a contemporary business context that develops into an interesting story. All the while Professor Olney is asking her students if the people in the story should shut down their business or keep the doors open. As elements of the story and associated formulas change, the answer to her question changes.
