From the Author: In 2022, I co-built a mentoring program for engineers in the masters program at UC Berkeley. Building on the program's strong foundation, I am now developing individualized, differentiated training for each mentor — a model inspired by Instructional Rounds in Education (City, Elmore, Fiarman & Teitel, 2009), which describes how supportive observational practice can build safe, reflective learning communities for both teachers and students.
The central premise: just as every writer develops differently, every mentor brings distinct strengths and faces distinct challenges. By observing mentor sessions with care and intentionality — not to evaluate, but to illuminate — I aim to offer feedback that is specific, encouraging, and useful.
