What Drives Student Engagement

Overview

When we think about student engagement, we might think: are students speaking? Participating? Looking attentive? Do they seem energized in class?

But engagement is not always that easy to spot. A student can appear quiet and still be deeply engaged in the work of making sense of everything. Another can appear compliant while remaining intellectually disconnected. In other words, engagement is not just about whether students seem “active”. It is also about whether they are cognitively and intellectually invested in the learning process.

One useful way to think about engagement comes from self-determination theory, a well-established framework in educational psychology that identifies autonomy, competence, and relatedness as three basic psychological needs that support high-quality motivation and engagement in learning (Niemiec & Ryan, 2009). Put simply, students are more likely to engage when they feel that they have a meaningful way into the work, that the challenge is possible, and that they are not navigating the course in isolation.

This does not mean every course needs to be highly interactive or “fun”. Nor does it mean that disengagement is always a problem instructors can solve alone. Students’ lives, workloads, prior educational experiences, and broader campus conditions can all shape how they show up in a course. But course design still matters.

A useful starting point is to shift from asking, "how do I get students to participate?" to asking, "what conditions in my course make engagement more likely?"

Support Autonomy

Niemiec and Ryan argue that students are more likely to engage when they experience some sense of agency in the learning process. In their self-determination theory, autonomy does not mean unlimited freedom. In fact, too much openness can sometimes make engagement harder and confusing. Autonomy here means that students feel they have some way into the work and can see themselves as active participants in the learning rather than just complying with requirements.

This matters because students do not disengage only when they are lazy or uninterested. Often, they disengage when the work feels overly prescribed, disconnected from purpose, or difficult to connect to their own thinking. A reading, problem set, or in-class activity may have a clear pedagogical purpose in the instructor’s mind, but if students experience it mainly as a task to complete, they are less likely to invest deeply in it.

One way to support autonomy is to make the purpose of the learning more visible. That does not require turning every assignment into a motivational speech. Often, just a brief explanation of what an activity is helping students practice can shift how students interpret the task. For example, instead of introducing a discussion board post as a participation requirement, you might explain that it is designed to help students share their interpretations, notice patterns, or prepare to compare perspectives before class discussion. These are small moves, but they can help students see that coursework is not just busywork. Autonomy can also be supported through bounded choice. Students do not need complete freedom in order to feel some ownership over the work. In many courses, even small forms of agency can make a difference: for example choosing between two case studies, selecting which question to pursue, or contributing an example from their own background or lived context. The point is to give students some room to make decisions and exercise judgment inside the structure you have already designed.

Support Competence

Another core need identified in self-determination theory is competence: the feeling that one can make progress in the learning, even when the work is challenging (Niemiec & Ryan, 2009). Instructors often think about engagement in terms of interest or motivation, but students are less likely to stay engaged when they feel lost, overwhelmed, or unsure how to begin. They may care about the subject and still withdraw from the work if they cannot tell what success looks like or how to prepare effectively.

If you are looking for a place to start, a useful question is:
Where in my course might students be disengaging simply because they do not know how to succeed?

One way to support competence is to make more of the learning process visible. In many disciplines, instructors are drawing on ways of reading, analyzing, solving, or interpreting that have become second nature to them. Students, meanwhile, may still be trying to figure out what counts as a strong response in the first place. This is especially common in introductory or gateway courses, where students may still be learning how the discipline itself works. For example, students may not know how to study for your kind of exam, how to write a strong thesis, or what “good thinking” actually looks like in your course. So, you might:

  • model how you would approach a difficult reading or problem,
  • show students an example of a strong response and explain why it works,
  • break a complex task into visible stages,
  • build in low-stakes practice before a high-stakes assignment,

These kinds of supports can be especially important for students who are new to the field or still learning how to study effectively in a college context. They reduce the amount of guesswork students have to do before they can even begin engaging with the actual content.

Competence is also built by having structured opportunities to apply or test ideas while they are still learning them.In that sense, competence is also about whether students have opportunities to practice the kind of thinking your course is asking of them. Put differently, engagement deepens when students are not just exposed to content, but asked to work with it. This is one reason active learning has become such a central area of higher education research. A brief knowledge check, a one-minute written explanation, a quick poll, or a peer explanation/note comparison can all help students bring ideas back into working memory and test what they actually understand.

The key is that these opportunities are either ungraded or graded in such a low-stakes way that making mistakes does not have a major consequence on students’ grades. That’s because competence is also shaped by how students experience mistakes. In some courses, students receive very little feedback or opportunity to revise until the stakes are already high. When that happens, early confusion can quickly become discouragement. Students are more likely to stay engaged when they have opportunities to test their understanding, get feedback, and adjust before one performance becomes overly consequential.

This is where low-stakes opportunities can be especially helpful. A practice problem, rough draft, or in-class application exercise can help students gauge their understanding before they are asked to demonstrate full mastery.

Support Relatedness

The third core need identified in self-determination theory is relatedness: the feeling of connection to others in the learning environment (Niemiec & Ryan, 2009). In classroom contexts, this does not simply mean that students “like” one another or feel socially comfortable at all times. It means that students experience the course as a place where they are expected, where participation feels possible, and where learning is not something they are navigating entirely alone. In many classes, especially large ones, students can move through the semester without ever feeling particularly visible to the instructor or connected to anyone else in the room. They may attend, take notes, complete assignments, and still experience the course as something they are moving through privately rather than participating in meaningfully. That kind of isolation can quietly suppress engagement.

Students are often less willing to ask questions or take intellectual risks when they are unsure how their contributions will be received. In that sense, what looks like “low participation” is not always a lack of preparation or motivation. Sometimes it is a rational response to uncertainty. This is one reason engagement often improves when we reduce the risk of participation. Students are more likely to contribute when they are given time to think before responding or when they can try out an idea with a peer before sharing it publicly. So you might consider:

  • Think-Pair-Share: Give students 60 seconds to "rehearse" an idea with a peer before asking for a public response.
  • The minute paper: At the end of a lecture segment, ask students to take 60 seconds to answer: "What was the most important thing you learned in the last 15 minutes?" and then ask them to share their responses
  • The Muddiest point: Ask students to identify: “What was the most 'muddy' or confusing point in this segment?” This allows students to see that their peers are also grappling with the same “muddy points”

Relatedness is also shaped by whether students have repeated opportunities to encounter one another as real collaborators in the learning process. A sense of connection can emerge through repeated structures: recurring pair or small-group conversations, collaborative problem-solving, peer explanation, discussion groups, or opportunities to compare interpretations and approaches over time.

These kinds of structures can be especially helpful in courses where the intellectual work is difficult. When students are asked to work through a concept or problem, they often gain more than social connection. They also gain language, perspective, and reassurance that confusion and interpretation are normal parts of learning rather than signs that they are “behind.”

Instructor communication also plays a role here. Students are more likely to engage when they perceive the course as a place where questions are welcome, uncertainty is expected, and help-seeking is not treated as evidence of weakness. This may simply mean being explicit about what kinds of participation are valued, how students can contribute meaningfully, and what to do when they feel stuck.

In practice, supporting relatedness often comes down to three questions:

  • Do students have any low-risk ways to participate?
  • Do they have repeated opportunities to think with other people?
  • Does the course communicate that confusion and questions are part of learning?
