Overview
While the Center for Teaching and Learning offers consultations and observations across a range of classroom settings, we believe Active Learning Classrooms present distinctive opportunities and challenges that merit their own dedicated suite of services.
Working alongside experienced ALC instructors, we have developed an observation protocol designed specifically for these spaces — attending to the ways ALCs shape movement, patterns of discourse, and approaches to student thinking. We also recognize that instructors move between ALC and non-ALC settings, sometimes by choice and sometimes not. Our services create space to explore what teaching in different environments reveals about adaptable, intentional practice.
Finally, because Active Learning Classrooms are a limited campus resource, we see real value in bringing current and past ALC instructors together. A dedicated community of practice can serve as a collective platform — advocating for instructors and students who are committed to ambitious, innovative teaching.
If you would like to schedule one of the following services, please contact Liam Aiello at teaching@berkeley.edu. Please note: all services can accommodate faculty who are either currently teaching in an ALC or are simply curious about what these classrooms offer.
- ALC Orientation - a time to meet in-person with a member of the Classroom Technology Team to visit an Active Learning Classroom to see first hand what they look like and what tools they offer.
- ALC Consultation - a virtual meeting with Liam Aiello, CTL Active Learning Consultant, to discuss questions, curiosities, and hopes for active learning instruction.
- ALC Observation - an in-person visit to your classroom, where the focus will be on the ways your classroom context plays a role in your teaching.
