Online & Hybrid Course Design Institute

Overview

The Online & Hybrid Course Design Institute (OHI) is a project-based program where instructors receive guidance and support while redesigning a class to be in an online or hybrid format or incorporate digital pedagogical features.

OHI is designed as a predominately asynchronous course experience with optional synchronous sessions held via Zoom. All participants also have access to individual Zoom consultations with a CTL consultant.

OHI is funded through a grant from UC Online, a unit within the UC Office of the President that supports individual campus efforts to promote cross-campus access to online and hybrid courses.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a $2,000 course development grant.

What is the Focus of OHI?

At the core of OHI is a focus on equitable teaching practices, considering how online and hybrid course development can be a pathway for developing course materials, activities, and assessments that ensure you're providing an inclusive learning experience for all of your students. From there, the program considers approaches you can use to design these flexible materials, activities, and assessments, focusing in particular on backward design, a method where you begin your course design by developing the learning objectives for your class and then determine how you will assess if students have achieved those objectives, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a method that aims to provide multiple ways for students to access materials and demonstrate their learning.

What are the program deliverables?

In order to successfully complete OHI, participants must submit a completed course map for their redesigned course, a bCourses homepage for the same course, and meet at least once with a CTL consultant.

Who Should Apply to OHI?

The program is focused on providing support for instructors who have limited experience with online and hybrid classes. Instructors who are already well-versed in the topic may find some of the materials to be a review; however, as the focus of OHI is to redesign a course to be taught in a new modality, all instructors are welcome to apply regardless of their experience level.

When is OHI?

There will be two OHI sessions: Spring 2025 and Summer 2025.

Spring 2025 will follow the semester instruction dates, January 21 - May 9, 2025. To successfully complete the program, it will require an estimated 2-3 hours per week.

Summer 2025 will follow the Session C dates, June 23 - August 15, 2025. To successfully complete the program, it will require an estimated 5-6 hours per week.

How do I apply?

Complete the following application form for both the Spring 2025 and Summer 2025 session by 5 pm, Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

CTL will notify applicants of their acceptance no later than Friday, December 13
