Moments of harm can occur between students in lab and group work settings as well as during instruction in many disciplines including social, economic, political, biological, environmental, and data sciences, arts, and literature. Participants in this session will discuss how harmful moments can impact the learning ability of students, especially those from underrepresented communities, and approaches to trauma-informed teaching. We will explore the strategy of trigger warnings and alternatives including annotated syllabi, operationalizing co-created group agreements, modeling accountability for our own mistakes, and engaging students in accountability-taking.
