Check In, Opening Session: Interpreting Liberatory Teaching in Partnership with Students (Chevron Room) Start your conference experience by gathering your name tag at the check-in table and enjoying morning refreshments. We will then convene for an opening session featuring a Berkeley instructor in conversation with his students. |
10:10 - 11:00 AM |
Opening Dialogues (Chevron, Home, and Sproul Rooms)For our opening session, our conference will feature a Berkeley instructor in conversation with two of his students. The conversation will focus on the ways this instructor enacts liberatory pedagogy in his courses. His students, in turn, will be invited to respond to his teaching reflection, describing how it sits within their overall experience at Berkeley as well as their hopes and visions for the future. A goal of this opening session is to offer conference attendees one interpretation of liberatory teaching. A second goal is to illustrate the ways our definitions of liberatory teaching are sometimes co-constructed in conversation with our students. Following our opening session, attendees will join discussion groups alongside colleagues from the conference planning committee. These opening dialogues will be settings for individuals to gather, share stories, and establish a shared vision for liberatory teaching, as well as how they might engage with the conference. Our hope is that these dialogues allow attendees to feel affirmed and heard as they join conversations about liberatory teaching and learning.
